Colour Count: The system contains 1,825 standardised colours, arranged according to a scientific colour system rather than historical or visual groupings.
Colour Space: It is based on the international CIELAB colour model, which reflects the way the human eye perceives differences between colours.
Structure: The colours are organised within a colour wheel consisting of 39 hue rows, together with a central, non-chromatic grey axis (000). Each colour is defined according to its lightness and chroma.
Each colour is identified by a seven-digit code, such as RAL 180 40 20, which describes its position within the colour system:
First 3 digits – Hue: Identify the colour’s position on the colour wheel, ranging from 000 to 360. For example, 000 represents grey, while 180 represents green.
Middle 2 digits – Lightness: Indicate how light or dark the colour is, ranging from 00 (black) to 100 (white).
Final 2 digits – Chroma: Represent the colour’s saturation or intensity. Higher values indicate a stronger and more vivid colour.
