In 1927, the German organisation RAL introduced a standardised palette of 40 colours. Before this, manufacturers and customers had to exchange physical colour samples to specify a shade, but the new system allowed them to use numerical codes instead. As new shades were gradually added, the collection was revised in 1961. During the 1960s, the colors were also given descriptive names to prevent mix-ups caused by transposed digits. Following the most recent expansion in 2020, the RAL Classic collection now includes 216 colours.
